Euro 2016: Gomez scores as World Cup champs top Group C

It would be the world cup champions Germany taking on Northern Ireland. The Germans came in as heavy favourites and despite heavy pressure, Die Mannschaft would have a hard time converting chances as they looked for their second win of the group stage.

Germany would thoroughly dominate play and Mesut Ozil creates countless opportunities for the frontline, but Thomas Muller's early effort is denied by the keeper.

On the half hour, Germany open the scoring after Ozil plays through Muller. The latter cuts into the area before setting up Mario Gomez for the finish. Joachim Loew's men would hold the 1-0 advantage into the break.

But the World champs would be unable to add to their as Mario Goetze wastes two clear chances in the second half. 1-0 would be the final score as Germany secure the top spot in Group C while Northern Ireland finsih third and are also going through.

We now take a look at the final structure of Group C. Germany came top with seven points, ahead on goal difference of Poland, who progressed with a 1-0 win over already-eliminated Ukraine. Northern Ireland have three points and qualified as one of the best third-placed finishers after later results.
